The Kohler Tunnel

Over the last couple of years, each early season viset to Road America revealed a new major change to the motorsports facility. In yeas past I would have referred to Road America as a racetrack, but the additions and renovations that are in progress or completed, are transforming Road America is into a year round motorsports facility.

The big change for 2007 is the addition of the Kohler Tunnel, located on the north end of the track, where the signature barn once stood. The tunnel crosses under the track between turns 13 and 14, offering teams a straight entry into the north paddock and all adjacent paddocks.

The tunnel will easily accommodate team transports and has pedestrian lanes on both sides.

The addition of the Kohler Tunnel allowed for the removal of the Billy Mitchell Bridge. The first time you come out of Thunder Valley, the view is now trees and sky. The track configuration has not changes, so there is no need to drastically adjust your racing line.

Removal of the bridge gives spectators a clear view of turn 13, one of the fastest corners on the track. Last year’s addition of the Suzuki Bridge at the exit of the Carousel, gave fans access to the outside west end of the track and a clear view of the Kink. Anyone with an appetite for high-speed corner viewing should enjoy these new spectator viewing locations.

Road America has nine spectator events scheduled for 2007. Add to the racing list the Skip Barber Racing School activities and Go Kart and Supermoto races and classes at the Briggs & Stratton Motorplex. For 2007 Road America has added the Road America Motorcycle School (RAMS) motorcycle safety and training program endorsed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF).

There are more facility upgrades in the works that you can expect to see in the future that will further expand the capabilities of the legendary racetrack.
